Transformational Healing Using The Modern Science of Psychedelics

Athens Psychedelic Therapy is Athens’ first psychedelic counseling practice dedicated to individuals who have not found relief from depression, trauma, anxiety, pain, and addiction through traditional means. We are in the midst of a psychedelic research renaissance, and scientists are discovering that these medications may be useful to treat mental health disorders. Unlike the experiences of the 1960’s, today’s psychedelic renaissance isn’t social, it’s scientific! We provide supportive counseling for…

  • Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

    Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine is technically a dissociative anesthetic, and has a long history of safe use. In 2019, it was FDA approved to treat refractory or treatment-resistant depression and has been celebrated for its rapid effects. Clients who are appropriate for Ketamine suffer from moderate to severe mood disorders or trauma and have not had success with standard methods. Ketamine is available through a local IV clinic with integration therapy immediately after or prescribed by a physician in the form of sublingual tablets. Sublingual Ketamine can be self-administered at our comfortable office in the presence of a licensed counselor.

  • Psychedelic Integration Therapy

Due to the illegality of classic psychedelics like LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline, DMT, Ibogaine, Ayahuasca, San Pedro, etc., there is a void of therapeutic support for those who are self-administering them. We provide indirect guidance in the form of preparation (before) and integration (after) sessions, but do not facilitate, or advocate for the use of any illegal substance. At Athens Psychedelic Therapy, prospective self-healers will be supported in their informed decision to seek healing outside of mainstream medicine. We are happy to partner with you in order to achieve the safest and most effective experience possible.

  • MDMA Assisted Psychotherapy

MDMA is not currently legal, but it has been assigned “breakthrough” status by the FDA. Phase three trials of MDMA to treat PTSD are being conducted with promising results. Many expect this medication to be available within the next 1-2 years. Our staff is currently receiving training from the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) in order to assure local access to this anticipated treatment. MDMA, however, does not lend itself to harm reduction integration therapy as the treatment model requires direct therapeutic contact while a client is on the medication.

more about us

Currently, we work with legal and FDA approved Ketamine using tested protocols for treatment-resistant depression. All other psychedelic substances are illegal, and we are not permitted to work with them directly. We do offer Harm Reduction Integration Therapy, which means preparation (before) and integration (after) sessions for those who are on a self-determined and self-sourced journey of psychedelic healing. For these individuals, we employ a harm reduction approach to psychedelic therapy. According to the National Harm Reduction Coalition, “Harm reduction is a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who use drugs.” This approach is evidenced-based and stigma reducing. We understand that people do take psychedelics, and believe that this status should not prevent them from receiving the most informed, safe, and supportive counseling available.

We understand that people are using psychedelics due to the terrible poverty of new and effective medications to treat mental health disorders. We recognize that together, we are standing at the starting line of a new frontier. Many psychedelic studies have produced recovery rates greater than 60% for disorders such as PTSD and treatment-resistant depression. Not only are these numbers striking, they may represent more than simple symptom relief. Psychedelics combined with psychotherapy may have the capacity to revolutionize healing by resolving the core existential dilemma or primal wound that can manifest as common mental health disorders. There are, however, many things we don’t understand about these substances and how they affect individuals with varying issues and life experiences. Additionally, we recognize that we are constrained by a cannon of scientific information that suffers from an over representation of culturally homogenous, medical, capitalistic, patriarchal, heteronormative, and colonizer perspectives.

Many other traditions rooted in spirituality or shamanism, for example, are less accessible, but important to the full understanding of healing through non-ordinary states of consciousness. We strive to be as informed and culturally competent as possible while respecting the uncertainty inherent in working with these new interventions. As people experiment with their own healing using psychedelics such as psilocybin, LSD, ayahuasca and more; we recognize a growing treatment gap between the results clinical trials produce and the experiences individuals have on their own. While we do not advocate for the use of any illegal substance, it is potentially harmful for individuals to seek these experiences without the supportive counseling that’s been integral to clinical trial results. Athens Psychedelic Therapy is stepping in to fill that treatment gap and support anyone who has chosen to heal using these methods. Coming soon, www.atlantapsychedelictherapy.com
